\'Sardinia then. Let it be Sardinia\'.

This is what D. H. Lawrence thought in 1921, during his visit to Sicily. He was staying in Taormina, having fled from England in 1919 after he and his German wife had been accused of being spies. But Sicily somehow seemed to oppress him. The mountains surrounding his accommodation, Fontana Vecchia, gave him claustrofobia. He needed \'room - room for the spirit: and you can have the toppling crags of romance\'.

Which destination should he choose, after the \'peaky confinement of Sicily\'? In his own words: 'There is Girgenti in the South. There is Tunis at hand, and the sulphur spirit and the Greek guarding temples, to make one madder? Never. Neither Syracuse and the madness of its great quarries. Tunis? Africa? Not yet. Not yet. Nor the Arabs, not yet. Naples, Rome, Florence? No good at all. Where then?'.

Lawrence wanted to avoid the sort of \'madness\' he associated with the Greek spirit and with the chaos of Italian art cities. He wasn\'t ready for Africa, but he needed the vastness of desert space. He was looking for a place which was not corrupted by industrialism and civilization. He found it in Sardinia: 'Lovely space about one, and travelling distances - nothing finished, nothing final. It is like liberty itself'.

Wij zijn geen spionnen, worden daar evenmin van beschuldigd. Wij wonen op het eiland Limmen, onderdeel van het Noord-Hollandse vasteland onder de zeespiegel. Wij zoeken ook altijd ruimte en vrijheid. Wij ontmoeten graag vrolijke, lachende mensen, die aandacht voor ons hebben en waar wij onze belangstelling aan kunnen tonen. In zeer bescheiden mate overigens, want wij houden niet van massa(\'s).
